namaqua national park increases its size 10.11.2008
south african national park (sanparks) and de beers consolidated mines (dbcm) signed an agreement last week that enables sanparks to lease 36'000 acres for 99 years. with this understanding, the south african namaqua national park grows to one of the largest national parks in the country. the park is expanded by 36'000 acres on its south-western border and reaches the coast and becomes now the fifth largest national park of south africa after kruger, kgalagadi, addo and richtersveld. the integration of the de beers conservation area in the national park is meant to increase the biodiversity of the park.
namaqua national park is located in one of the least populated areas of south africa, in northern cape, on the way from cape town to namibia. due to its winter rains, namaqua national park is famous for its amazing flower display in spring. more than 1'000 of the 3'500 different plant species that exist in te park can not be found anywhere else in the world. if you look carefully you will also see the smallest tortoise in the world, the namaqua speckled padloper. other animals and of course also the fascinating quiver trees can be admired in the park.
